A childhood favorite

I’d like to welcome a breakfast dish back to the table:

Meet breakfast rice. I used to eat this all the time as a kid growing up (and not just for breakfast) but I abandoned/forgot about it as I got older.

My bowl contains:

  • 1 cup cooked white rice
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tsp (packed) brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • A little vanilla extract

Just mix all of that together and heat it up (either on the stove or in the microwave, your choice).

This is the stuff of the gods. I can only imagine how a little peanut butter might taste in there. But that is for another lovely morning.

Now I remember why I loved this stuff so much. It has a very subtle sweet flavor and is so filling. I felt like I was eating dessert for breakfast. Forget those dumb kids who made fun of me for eating sweetened rice because this stuff is simply amazing.

And rice is so versatile you could include just about anything you want. Think of it as the oatmeal of Japan.

I woke up with a stiff back. I must have slept in a bad position last night. So yoga time was not only desired, but needed first thing this morning.

Watch me go:

(And please, no comments about how my position or posture is incorrect. I’ve only been consistently practicing yoga for a few weeks now and I’m still learning.)

For all of you Biggest Loser fans out there in Blogland, does your significant other watch the show with you? Sometimes J will watch the weigh in and elimination part with me, but usually he just hears it from my laptop while he’s punching away at some enemy on his video games. Apparently he’s been paying more attention than I ever realized, though.

This is the conversation we had yesterday at the train station:

Maria: Yeah, I’m not eating sweets this week since I can’t run. Trying to keep my eating under control.
J: Well, you know what Bob and Jillian say. If you can’t exercise you have to control your nutrition.
Maria:  (Yes, I’m sure that’s what my face looked like.)

Who is this man and where did he come from? More importantly, what did he do with my husband?

Hmm, never had sweet rice. Is that sort of like rice pudding? I don’t think I’ve had that either. Sounds good though.

That rice looks sooooo good! Rice pudding is exactly what I was thinking as well :) rice pudding is also very yummy. I really need to try your breakfast rice! I’m sure I’d love it. I hope your back is feeling better. I don’t watch the biggest loser but I do watch a ton of other shows and when my boyfriend watches with me he constantly asks questions so it gets kind of annoying :) i’d rather just watch by myself! haha

I LOVE breakfast rice. My aunt and grandma used to make it for us all the time but my mother never liked it, so it was a special treat.

Your posture looks really good for someone who hasn’t been doing it too long. If your pain increases, though, there might be a problem. Otherwise, keep it up and it will come naturally.

  4. LOL @ your husband’s comment!

I eat this at least 3 times per week!
Since it’s fall, I add in some pumpkin puree, reduce the milk, and add cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg to make it spicy and sweet! I’m a big fan of throwing in some ground flas, and I ALWAYS eat my breakfast rice with a glob of ooey gooey peanut butter and a jam (lately- apple butter) on the side! I’m glad someone else does this!
(I have celiac disease- so this is my gluten-free oatmeal!)

  6. My husband watches BL with me, but he thinks it is too long (2 hours is a little bit excessive)!

Mmm, I LOVE rice for breakfast!

LOL! Wow your hubby said that to you?! How’d that make you feel? lol

I know this is going to sound weird but trying adding chocolate like cocoa powder or melted chocolate in your breakfast porridge. We have that dish back in the Philippines and it’s sooo good. I might just try making some this week. I’m going to ask my grandma how she makes it. She’s a great cook!!! If I do make it, I’ll take a pic of it and put up the recipe :)

I started doing yoga a couple of months ago and it really goes well with running. It helps me stretch really well and keeps me from any kind of injury. I bought BL’s Weight Loss Yoga w/Bob. It’s REALLY good. I always wake up feeling sore the day after.

    • Thanks for letting me know about the DVD. I had been looking at it for a while now, but wasn’t sure whether to get it. Now I’m thinking it would make a good Christmas gift. :)

Also, I will have to remember the cocoa trick. Thanks!

  8. i love how versatile rice is. i love rice and mango. i used it eat that combo all the time when i was younger!

Breakfast rice is great! I recommend it to clients a lot.

  11. I love breakfast rice. My family calls it Arroz con leche. I grew up eating that too. I haven’t had it in awhile….I think it’s about time I do. =)

My bf watches Biggest Loser with me. Tuesday is our t.v. night. We don’t watch much t.v but it is our tradition to watch BL together after the gym.
